Before you enjoy hitting the road this summer season there are a few things you will want to keep in mind as the temperatures rise. To keep you and your vehicle cool in the hot temperatures you will want to ensure your cooling and A/C systems are properly checked and repaired. Your vehicle cooling system and A/C system are important because they make sure you and your vehicle don’t overheat in the summer weather. Your cooling system is what regulates the temperatures of your engine and other components under the hood, whereas your A/C system helps keep you and your passengers cool while traveling. At Graff Mt. Pleasant we want you to stay cool this summer season. By learning the importance of your cooling and A/C systems and learning how to detect signs of disrepair you can make the most of your summer drive.
Your vehicle’s cooling system is a particularly important component of your vehicle during the summer because it keeps your engine cool while the car is running. Additionally, it protects your engine and other internal parts from severe damage that could be caused by overheating. The cooling system contains a pump that moves engine coolant to and from the radiator, which then uses cold air to decrease the temperature of the engine coolant. This is important in the summer because extremely high temperatures can cause damage to your car, truck, SUV, or crossover. However, if you notice any of the signs below, you should bring your vehicle in for an inspection:
The temperature gauge on your dashboard is higher or lower than normal. Have you noticed the temperature gauge on your dashboard moving out of the “normal zone”? This can be caused by two situations:
Either way, bring your vehicle in to our service center for an inspection to prevent any further costly damage to the cooling system or engine. Some other warning signs to watch out for are:
Your heater isn’t working properly: The heater in your vehicle operates using the same coolant that is used by your engine. If the flow of coolant is disrupted, or a problem occurs with any of the cooling system components, the temperature of the air release through the heater can be affected, indicating that your cooling system needs to be inspected.
You notice a coolant leak: If you suspect your vehicle is leaking coolant, you will most likely notice a bright colored liquid dripping from the bottom of your car since coolant fluid comes in bright colors like pink, orange, yellow, or green. If you notice a sweet smell coming from your vehicle, this may indicate that your vehicle is experiencing an internal leak.
Your engine temperature warning light comes on: When there is a problem with your cooling system, it can be hazardous because your engine can overheat and cause further damage. If your vehicle detects an issue, your engine temperature light will turn on to alert you to bring your vehicle in to our local service center quickly.
By scheduling a routine coolant flush and cooling system inspection, you can ensure your cooling system is prepared to run efficiently all year long. At Graff Mt. Pleasant, we recommend getting your coolant flushed every 24,000 miles or every two years, whichever comes first. To learn more about your cooling system visit our cooling system service page.
The temperature within your vehicle can climb over 40+ degrees hotter than the outside temperature during the summer months. Not only is this extremely dangerous, but it can also be uncomfortable if your vehicle’s A/C System is not operating properly. To escape the heat, make sure your A/C System is ready to provide you and your passengers with a comfortable driving experience all summer long.
Your A/C System works to remove heat from the air inside your vehicle and pushes it out of the car through the radiator. It then passes cold air through the evaporator and into the car. Below are some signs that may indicate your vehicle’s A/C System may not be working correctly:
You have a weak airflow from your vents. If you notice a weak airflow from your interior vents, this could be the result of a hose in the A/C System coming loose, a broken seal in the ventilation system, a broken ventilation fan, or the development of mold or mildew in the evaporation core. Here are some potential warning signs:
You have a lack of cold air from the vents: When you turn on your A/C System and there is a lack of cold air, this could indicate a few different issues, including a leak in a seal or hose, a failed switch or fuse, a damaged condenser or evaporator, or a failed blower motor. If you are experiencing a lack of cold air from your vehicle’s vents, we recommend you schedule a full A/C System inspection to diagnose the issue.
You have an A/C leak: A leak in your A/C System can be hard to spot, but it can also cause serious problems and severe damage to other vehicle components if not addressed. An A/C leak can be a result of the age your A/C system. Over time, your hoses and seals can lose their elasticity and can allow moisture to enter the system. Common signs of an A/C leak include low air pressure or coolant dripping from your vehicle.
You smell a bad odor from the vents: If you turn on your A/C system and smell a bad stench coming from the vents, that could indicate that dirt has built up on the air cabin filter or mildew has accumulated in the system. Schedule an appointment to have our auto experts resolve the problem today!
