The interior can also suffer from collected dust, allergens, dirt, and road salt, which can make driving uncomfortable, especially if you have allergies. By taking the time to deep clean your car this spring, and taking small steps to keep it clean over the seasons, you can provide the materials throughout your vehicle a longer life. See our spring cleaning tips for your car below to get started!

Exterior Car Cleaning Tips

Giving your vehicle a car wash has many benefits for your vehicle’s exterior other than making it look great. During the winter season, dirt, gravel, and corrosive road salt are kicked up onto your vehicle and can build up throughout the season. By neglecting to wash this gunk off, it can create rust on your vehicle’s undercarriage and other exposed components. It can also cause micro scratches on the paint, which can lead to rust in the long run. This is a factor that contributes to rust stains on your exterior. By having an occasional car wash, including a wax, you can prevent unnecessary rust on your vehicle's exterior. Local car washes are a great solution if you need to be in and out quickly. You can sometimes find monthly or unlimited packages so you can go as often as needed. But, if you're someone who likes to wash your car at home, we recommend doing so about once a week. We also have a few tips to help you get a better clean at home:

  • Microfiber rags, soft sponges, or soft brushes are the most effective way to wash your vehicle’s exterior. Do not use magic erasers, as they are too abrasive for your vehicle’s paint.

  • Dryer sheets are a gentle, yet effective way to get bugs and dirt off of your front grill. However, you should avoid using them on your vehicle's paint.

  • Use specialized car cleaning soap. Regular dish detergent is too harsh for your vehicle's paint.

  • Remove tree sap by using a microfiber towel, soap, and hot water.

  • Wash your vehicle one side at a time so you can wash the soap away before it dries.

  • Fully rinse your car AND water bucket before and after. Also, make sure to rinse the undercarriage as thoroughly as you can.

  • Rinse your tools and always switch your bucket water so that you do not wash your car with old dirt.

  • Wax your car! Waxing is a cleaning step that tends to get overlooked, but it actually helps prevent dirt from scratching your car.

Interior Car Cleaning Tips

Depending on the current state of your car, cleaning it out might seem daunting. As we mentioned previously, doing this can help to extend the life of your car's materials and prevent against premature wear. Cleaning out the interior can not only make your drive feel refreshed, but it can also help you out in emergency situations, too. For instance, if you get pulled over, do you know where your registration and insurance information is? By taking inventory and organizing the items in your car, you'll be able to find just what you need in no time. Here are a few guiding tips that'll help you get started:

  • Decide what items you want to keep in your car. You might want to get rid of winter clutter like snow brushes, extra gloves, etc.

  • Clear out all trash from your center console, the floor, glove box, trunk, and side door compartments.

  • Wash the inside of your windows to clear your view. A semi-wet microfiber rag and a vinegar-based solution is a great way to get that streak-free shine.

  • Use coffee filters to dust off your dashboard and plastic surfaces. Coffee filters and microfiber rugs are perfect for picking up dust instead of spreading it.

  • Shake out all of your rugs to release any loose dirt and gravel.

  • Vacuum rugs, carpets, and seats to remove crumbs and dirt.

  • Air out your vehicle with the windows down (weather permitting) and invest in vehicle air fresheners.

How to Remove Road Salt from Vehicle's Carpets

Even if you're careful with getting in and out of your car during the winter, the road salt seems to always find its way into your vehicle and on your carpet and rugs. To prevent stains on your carpet, we recommend investing in plastic car mats, but if you have salt on your carpets or mats now, there are a few simple steps you can take to remove it:

  1. Fill a spray bottle with a 50/50 diluted water and vinegar solution.

  2. Spray the vinegar solution on the various salt spots just enough to get the carpet slightly wet. Then let it stand for a few minutes.

  3. Use a clean dry rag to dab the wet spots. Do not wipe or dab the spot too hard because you want to have the dry rag absorb the stain and not smear.

  4. If the rag becomes too wet and the stain remains on the carpet, you will want to switch it out for a dryer rag and continue the process.

  5. Once the spot is dry your salt stain should be gone. If the salt stain still appears to be there you can repeat steps 2-4.
